AMECHE, Don. (Kenosha, WI, May 31, 1908-Scottsdale, AZ, Dec. 6, 1993). Actor. Ameche is a well-respected Hollywood actor with such film credits as "Cocoon," for which he received an Oscar in 1986. He attended COLUMBIA COLLEGE (LORAS COLLEGE) and, in 1925, was elected captain of the basketball team. On November 26, 1932, Ameche married Honore Prendergast, a Dubuque girl and an alumnus of CLARKE COLLEGE.
Delivering the 1954 commencement address, Ameche declared Loras education the best in the land and was awarded the degree Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa. In 1984 Ameche assisted in a promotional film for Loras entitled The Loras Experience."
