BURTON, John. (Bonsall, Derbyshire, England, ABT. 1799--Dubuque, IA, 1854) John partnered with his brother Thomas first at farming in New York state, then in Dubuque as smelters of LEAD in Durango.

At 50 John returned to Bonsall and courted a young widow, Mary Barton Gell. They came to Iowa and married at Dubuque in 1852. Later Mary's whole family moved to Dubuque. Mary's sister Elizabeth Barton married Joseph HEROD.

The Burton's Furnace Road in the area in 2012 undoubtedly relates to the smelter he operated in the 1830s.
