NORMAN, Edith Eloise Stuart
NORMAN, Edith Eloise Stuart. (Dubuque, IA, June 21, 1921--Dubuque, IA, Dec. 2, 2011). The daughter of Bert E. and Charlotte Anna (Atkinson) Stuart, Edith attended DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of music degree. She also studied music at the Chicago Musical College.
She married Wayne A. NORMAN, Sr. on August 29,1942,at ST. LUKE'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. They moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she taught at the Proctor School of Music and was a performing pianist. When the couple returned to live in Dubuque, Edith continued her piano performing, taught piano lessons and played the organ at WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH where she also served as a deacon.
Active in local organizations, Edith was a board member and past president of the Dubuque Arts Council Artists in Residence, member of the board of the DUBUQUE SUYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, and was a founder and past president of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra League. She was the founder of the Iowa Association of Local Arts Agencies. Edith headed the women's division of the United Way, served as a member of the Mount Pleasant Board and was past president of the Junior Board VNA. She was a longtime volunteer and past president of The Sunshine Circle at FINLEY HOSPITAL and a member of Chapter IK PEO Sisterhood.
