AIR GUITAR. Popular teen-age entertainment and competition of the 1980s and 1990s. A solo or group performance of lip- and instrument-synching to a song played on a sound system, air guitar was popularized in Dubuque as a competition. Instruments including prop guitars, drum sticks and microphones were supplied to the contestants.
