CARR, Sabin. (Dubuque, IA- ). Olympic athlete. At the 1928 Olympic Games held in Amsterdam, Holland, Carr became the first Dubuque native to win a gold medal. He did not even have to reach his own record-setting pole vault to achieve the honor. As a student at Yale and prior to the use of modern equipment, Carr was the first pole-vaulter in the United States to clear 14 feet. He performed the feat at the 1928 Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
