KARBERG, Peter
KARBERG, Peter. (Germany, Aug. 27, 1840-Lincoln, NB, July 2, 1884). Publisher of the Nord Iowa Post. Karberg came to Iowa in 1857 and settled in Guttenberg where he was a teacher. In 1861, upon the start of the CIVIL WAR, he enlisted and was promoted to Second Lieutenant in a colored regiment in June, 1863. He was mustered out June 16, 1866.
After the war, Karberg lived for several years in New York and Philadelphis and then returned to Clayton County, Iowa, and was appointed the first United States Mail Agent on the CHICAGO, DUBUQUE, AND MINNESOTA RAILROAD and served one and a half years. He then purchased the printing material of the Dubuque Staats Zeitung, moved it to Lansing, Allamakee County and established a German paper under the name of Nord Iowa Post, which he removed to Dubuque in 1877. Karberg was a member of the Governor's staff; he was appointed by Gov. Gear, during his first administration, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was re-appointed to the same position.
