GONNER, Nicholas Sr.(Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, --Dubuque, IA, Dec. 20, 1892). Editor. Gonner came to the United States in 1866 and settled in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. On March 28, 1872, he moved to Dubuque and devoted the remainder of his life to journalism.

Gonner was the editor of the LUXEMBOURG GAZETTE from 1872 to 1892 and IOWA which were both printed by the CATHOLIC PRINTING COMPANY. He was a leader in the organization of the ROMAN CATHOLIC MUTUAL PROTECTIVE SOCIETY OF IOWA and served as the president of the German Press Association from 1887 to 1889. Gonner was considered an authority on church architecture and was the author of many poems in the Luxembourg language.
