MA-TAN-E-QUA. (Dubuque Mines, IA, 1810--Tama Reservation, IA, 1897). The last war-chief of the SAUK AND FOX, Ma-tan-e-qua was one of five representatives sent by his tribe to find a suitable place to live in Iowa after its exile to Kansas. The chief and his associates purchased eighty acres of land from a settler in Tama County for $1000 establishing a unique Indian-owned homeland in the United States.
