WOODWORTH, W. W.
WOODWORTH, William W. (Herkimer Co. N.Y. (Jan. 1, 1817-- ). When Woodworth was eighteen years of age, he worked for his father's store. He remained there until he was twenty-one years of age. With his brother, he entered the mercantile business and continued this until 1857 when he came to Iowa. (1)
Woodworth settled in Dubuque and returned to the mercantile business with his brother. They continued in business until 1870 when William purchased and managed the JULIEN HOUSE at the corner Main and Second STREETS. (2) In 1873 he ordered the construction of an arch over the alley between Main and Iowa. When the Dubuque Hotel Company announced its decision to construct a new hotel on the site, following the destruction of the older building by fire, it proposed to rebuild the arch six inches higher (11.5) feet from the alley and six feet further north. (3)
By 1897 Woodworth was living in St. Paul, Minnesota. He had moved to Chicago by 1902. (4)
