SEARS ROEBUCK AND COMPANY. Sears is an American multinational mid-range department store chain headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The official name of Sears was Sears, Roebuck & Company.

The company was founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvan Curtis Roebuck in 1893 as a mail order catalog. Julius Rosenwald took control in 1895 and expanded company sales and profits. In 1925 the company began opening local department stores. The business peaked in the 1950s and 1960s. In 2005 the firm was bought out by Kmart, which renamed itself Sears Holdings.

The 1941 through 1962 Dubuque City Directory listed 520 Main.

The 1966 through 1993 Dubuque City Directory listed 300 S. Locust.

In January 2014 it was announced that Sears located in KENNEDY MALL would close in February.
