SHIPLEY, George A.
SHIPLEY, George A. (Platteville, WI-- ). Recipient, Distinguished Service Cross. On November 1, 1918, near Landres-et-St. Georges, France, Captain Shipley's organization was held up by machine-gun fire from the front. Captain Shipley exposed himself to heavy fire in order to make a flank attack on the enemy. Armed with a rifle, he courageously attacked a machine-gun position which resulted in the capture of the gun and twenty-eight prisoners. During the period from November 1 to 7 he led a battalion in its attack on the Bois Hazois and Beis L'Epasse and led a detachment which captured the strongly defended town of L'Ettane. His valiant conduct had a marked moral effect upon his men.
