HAAS, Charles
HAAS, Charles. (Savannah, IL-- ). Charles Haas (C'85) was a standout in football and wrestling while attending the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE. Anchoring the offensive line, he earned First Team All-Iowa Conference in 1983 and Second Team All-IIAC in 1981. He was also a member of the 1980 IIAC Championship team.
Haas had his best wrestling season in 1981 by taking Second Place in the Heavyweight division at the Iowa Conference Championships. His finish at the conference tournament earned him a place at the Division-III National Tournament. Haas also finished Third Place in 1985. (1)
After his graduation, Haas coached one year in Camanche, Iowa and led the program to a runner-up finish in 1987 in Iowa's inaugural state dual team tournament. Camanche placed third in the traditional tournament that year.
Haas and his family moved to Dubuque where he worked several years at St. Joseph's before joining the staff at the University of Dubuque as a wrestling coach and the defensive coordinator for the football team. He was the head coach at the university for five seasons before moving to STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL in 1999.
In 1994, Haas returned to the University of Dubuque to become the head wrestling coach and assistant football coach. Haas was a four-time Mississippi Valley coach of the year and three times was named Northeast Iowa Coach of the Year when he announced his retirement in 2023. Including his time at the University of Dubuque and Camanche, Haas had a career record of 343-255-1 dual record. He was inducted into the University of Dubuque Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Northwest Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. (2)
