AGRIA, John J. (Mount Vernon, NY- ). Agria, successor to Walter F. PETERSON, Jr., assumed the presidency of the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE in 1990. Chosen from a field of sixty-two candidates, Agria was then serving as vice-president of academic services at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

The son of a Presbyterian minister, Agria received his undergraduate degree in political science at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Both his master's degree in constitutional law and doctorate in political philosophy, public administration and international relations came from the University of Chicago. Agria taught political science and then served as dean of academic affairs at Alma College, Alma, Michigan. He also served as dean for academic affairs at Long Island University at Southampton, New York.

In 1996 Agria was appointed to the Grievance Commission of the Iowa Supreme Court by Chief Justice Arthur A. McGiverin. Agria began his term of service with the commission on Jan. 1, 1996, served for a period of two years. (1)
