NEWMAN, John
NEWMAN, John. (Geneseo, New York, October 20, 1832--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 5, 1903). Newman began learned the carriage making trade by serving a five year apprenticeship. In the spring of 1854, he left the east and emigrated to Iowa where he began work as a carriage maker for Augustin A. COOPER. (1) During the CIVIL WAR, he served thirty-six months as a private in the Iowa Cavalry as a farrier. (2)
Later Newman worked for Thomas CONNOLLY and Thomas ARMSTRONG. In 1877 he established his own carriage factory and in 1890 constructed a new factory, J. Newman & Son, manufacturers of carriages, buggies and wagons. He was also associated at one time with Henry RICHTER. (3)
