POOLE, Horace. (Danvers, MA, Dec. 18, 1837--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 16, 1916). Poole, the son-in-law of Solon LANGWORTHY, entered Kimball Union Academy at Meriden, New Hampshire. Upon graduating, he made a voyage to China to learn navigation. He returned to the United States in 1857, moved to Dubuque in 1858, and accepted the position of bookkeeper in the commission house of Smith and Cannon. (1)
Poole was a member of the GOVERNOR'S GREYS. Upon President Lincoln’s call for soldiers at the beginning of the CIVIL WAR he enlisted on April 20, 1861, and was enrolled as a member of Company I, First Iowa Infantry. (2) In 1862, he enlisted in the 21st I.V.I., and was commissioned Adjutant; in February, 1863, he was commissioned Adjutant General, and held that position until the close of the war in July, 1865. He returned to Dubuque and in 1870, the firm of Poole, Gilliam & Co., was organized jobbers and wholesale dealers in fancy groceries, teas, syrups, canned goods, fruits, tobaccos and cigars at 272 Main Street. In 1892 Poole was appointed a receiver for the DUBUQUE ELECTRIC RAILWAY, LIGHT AND POWER COMPANY. In 1898 he became the Chief Deputy United States Marshall, for the Northern District of Iowa. (4)
