NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION (NAWIC). An organization founded to educate women about the construction industry, Dubuqueland Chapter No. 244 was chartered on March 4, 1978.

The local chapter was the first of its kind to be chartered in Dubuque and the first chartering of 1978 for the national association. Officers of the local organization included Dottye Fitch, president; Phyllis Haverland, treasurer; and Margaret Eitel, member of the board. The charter group included women working in such phases of construction as architecture, contracting, engineering, or land developing, but not women with "hard hat" types of occupations.
