CONVERSATIONAL CLUB. This literary organization was founded in 1868 or 1869. Its demise occurred sometime before 1881. The group was reorganized in the home of Mary Newbury ADAMS. (1)

Undoubtedly inspired by the ROUND TABLE club organized by her husband, Austin ADAMS, the women's group was definitely focused on education. The organization had ten departments: Education and Local Progress, Political Science and Economy, Mental and Moral Philosophy, The fine Arts, Political Revolutions, Belles Lettres, Ecclesiastical History, Chemical Anatomy and Physiology, Physical Geographical and Geology, and Natural Philosophy and Astronomy. Readings of Hegel and Homer were made alone or together and examined from as many points of view as possible. (2)
