MILKMAN. The last independent milkman in Dubuque was Howard Allen who came to Dubuque in 1931 from Connecticut. He retired in December 1971, after thirty years of service to as many as five hundred customers in the south central part of Dubuque around Grandview and University avenues.
Allen began his milk deliveries in 1941 after the passage of pasteurization laws. He continued as an independent milkman who bought directly from the dairy and gambled he could sell it.
