ORACARE. In November, 2012, Dr. Richard Downs, a dentist at Abbadent Dentistry, announced that he had developed a revolutionary dental cleansing rinse. Oracare is the first oral rinse to release the potent and yet safe cleansing power of chlorine dioxide--shown to kill bacteria, viruses and fungi, destroy biofilms and neutralize bacterial toxins.

Downs had been lecturing on chlorine dioxide since 1984. The problem had been that the moment the bottle containing chlorine dioxide dissolved in water was opened, the solution lost its potency. Oracare used two separate bottles. Users mixed the sodium chloride with mild acids and a catalyst which released chlorine dioxide from the sodium chloride. The individual portion has a potency for several minutes--enough time for users to rinse.

Tests at the University of Iowa showed that Oracare killed all the major pathogens for gum disease and the bacteria that cause tooth decay. In addition, Dr. Downs stated that Oracare did not stain teeth or create a bad taste.

In 2012 Oracre was available only through a dentist although some doctors were sending the product home with their patients.
