HOPPE, Fred
HOPPE, Fred. (Burscheidt, Germany, Mar. 3, 1836--Spokane Falls, WA, Dec., 1892). Director, Iowa Conservatory of Music. Following the CIVIL WAR, Hoppe taught music in Dubuque, founded the Iowa Conservatory of Music, and was elected the leader of the GERMANIA BAND. Requests for the band to perform could be made at his home on Clay Street or at the DUBUQUE CABINET MAKERS' ASSOCIATION. (1)
Hoppe held the position of organist at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH for three years and beginning in 1876 served in the same capacity at SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. He was married in 1857 to Laura Hager of St. Louis; they had six children.
