SWEENEY, William. ( ). Sweeney began working at the DUBUQUE PACKING COMPANY in 1956 and for two years was a member of the Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butcher Workmen of North America. He then transferred to the maintenance department where he remained the next thirty-seven years. As a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 758, he held over the years the offices of president an business agent.

Sweeney was responsible for negotiating collective bargaining agreements with the City of Dubuque and served one year as chief spokesman for all city unions. He also served as the lead negotiator with the packing company on behalf of the 130 maintenance employees.

Sweeney was inducted into the DUBUQUE AREA LABOR HALL OF FAME in 2016.
