MESCH, Elgene S. (St. Donatus, IA, May 26, 1921--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 13, 2016) The daughter of Ferdinand and Catherine (Geber) Schmidt, Elgene married Alvin Mesch in St. Donatus, Iowa, on November 7, 1945.

She was a resident of Dubuque and a member of the CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY and parish Rosary Society for nearly 70 years. Her formal education ended with 8th grade, but she took up her studies again in mid-life and graduated from DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GED Program at age 50 in 1971.

Committed to community service, Jean was a Girl Scout troop leader, served on the Dubuque County Democratic Party Central Committee for many years, volunteered with the Phone-a-Friend Crisis Line, and volunteered at MERCY MEDICAL CENTER for more than 20 years until she was 89 years old. Following her first career as wife, mother and homemaker, she was employed as a housemother in the dormitory at Finley Hospital School of Nursing from 1978 until the school closed.
