SCHMID, George Sr. (Lawrenceburg, IN, Feb. 16, 1855-- ). Schmid came with parents to Dubuque at an early age and received his education in the city. At the age of fourteen, he traveled to Ohio to learn cabinet making and then returned to Dubuque from 1877 to 1882 and worked as a mechanic.

He joined the DUBUQUE FURNITURE AND BURIAL COMPANY until 1888. Schmid then joined his brother in Chicago in opening the American Silver Plate Company in 1889 in Chicago. He remained with this company for three years before selling his interest in the company and beginning the Schmid Manufacturing Company in Chicago. In 1900 he tried unsuccessfully to open a plant in San Francisco and then returned to Dubuque where he opened the Eagle Valley Works.
