HANCOCK, John T. (Lebanon, IL, Nov. 12,1824--Dubuque, IA, Aug. 14, 1894). Hancock was a major midwestern grocer and senior member of the firm of JOHN T. HANCOCK & SONS. Hancock settled in Dubuque in 1845 and established the business that carried his name on Main Street between Second and Third STREETS.

His business remained in this location for nine years and was then moved to the corner of Main and Fourth. For twelve years the company, located on Lower Main, operated from the building that today is prominent in the area for its notable corner spire.

In January 1874, Hancock paid $4,500 in cash to the DUBUQUE SAVINGS INSTITUTION, the full extent of his liability to the depositors as a stockholder of the company. This allowed the receiver to pay off the 20% dividend declared on January 24, 1874. (1)

With the addition of his sons, the company was renamed JOHN T. HANCOCK & SON and then JOHN T. HANCOCK & SONS.
