GEHRIG, Henry

GEHRIG, Henry. (Dubuque, IA, Apr. 3, 1864--Nov. 10, 1941). Born in the JEFFERSON HOUSE which his parents, Joseph and Ursula Kiene Gehrig, operated, Gehrig worked with his father in the operation of the hotel and upon the death of his father he took over its management. The Jefferson House was one of the many hotels which were operated in the vicinity of the DUBUQUE COUNTY COURTHOUSE in the old "horse and buggy days" and with the development of the automobile passed out of existence. He continued its operation until 1916, when he retired.

He married Miss Mary Schrup, the daughter of Joseph Schrup, at St. Joseph's Church, Key West. Mrs. Gehrig died Jan. 14, 1939.

Gehrig was long prominent in Dubuque County political circles as an active member of the Democratic Party. Fraternally he was affiliated with the Dubuque lodge of Elks for twenty-eight years and for many years served as a member of the sick committee of that lodge. He was also a member of the ANCIENT ORDER OF UNITED WORKMEN (A.O.U.W.). At the time of his death, and for many years previous, he was a director of the DUBUQUE FIRE AND MARINE INSURANCE COMPANY.
