SAINT MATTHEW LUTHERAN CHURCH. Founded in 1907 with one hundred seventy charter members, the future Saint Matthew Lutheran Church was established by Rev. J. Heinrich Luz. Luz was one of the people instrumental in bringing WARTBURG THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY to Dubuque. He organized the church as St. Matthew German Evangelical Lutheran Church. Meeting in a Methodist church at Jackson and 25th STREETS, the congregation grew so quickly that it constructed its own church three years later.

Unidentified parade event.

Following its 49th anniversary, St. Matthew and several other Lutheran churches in Dubuque founded the Martin Luther Home for the Aged. Located across the street from Wartburg Seminary, this institution later became LUTHER MANOR.

In 1958 the name of the church was shortened, and two years later it officially joined the American Lutheran Church. Discussions in 1962 with St. John and St. Mark Lutheran churches about a possible merger ended because of costs and differences in philosophy. An educational wing was added in 1966. In 2014 the church was located at 1780 White.
