SMITH, Gregory (Dubuque, IA-- ). Military officer. In 2008 Smith was a Navy rear admiral and head of public affairs for the Multi-National Force—Iraq. His assignment carried the responsibility of keeping people informed about Operation Iraqi Freedom and being one of two principal spokesmen for General David Petraeus.

In Dubuque, Smith graduated from WAHLERT HIGH SCHOOL in 1976 and earned a bachelor of art’s degree in marketing from the University of Iowa. He was commissioned in 1982 and began his career in aviation before being assigned to the public affairs department at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Florida. He has served as special assistant for public affairs to the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.
