ECONOFOODS. Major grocery store on Dubuque's westside. Located at the corner of Kennedy and Hillcrest, Econofoods was part of the Nash Finch Company. Once one of the major grocery stores in Dubuque along with Eagles and Hy-Vee, the store faced stiff competition after 2003 with the growth of Hy-Vee and the development of the Walmart grocery operation. While food store sales grew 1.6% from 2005 to 2008, the market dropped significantly from 2007-2008. Eagles closed their store across Kennedy Road from Econofoods in 2005. The impact of Hy-Vee increased with the construction of their new store between Dubuque and Asbury. In December 2009 Econofoods announced that it too would close.
