MERCHANTS' EXCURSION
MERCHANTS' EXCURSION. On August 3, 1864 it was announced that a "merchant's excursion" was being planned. The event was to cultivate business along the route of the DUBUQUE AND SIOUX CITY RAILROAD.
To achieve the goal, two passenger cars and an engine would be chartered. Beginning in the morning, the train would stop at all stations to visit the local merchants. Dinner would be planned for Manchester with an overnight stop made in Independence. The next day the train would continue to Cedar Falls. Dinner would be planned in Waterloo with a return to Dubuque that night. The wives of the businessmen would be welcomed.
