WHITE HEELSPLITTER. Mussel. Widespread and common in eastern Iowa, the white heelsplitter is found in pools or sluggish streams with a mud, sand, or fine gravel bottom. The hosts for the young of this mussel include the common carp, green sunfish, largemouth bass and white crappie.
