ASSOCIATION FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF MANUFACTURERS. On December 16, 1873, an association to encouragement manufacturers relocating in Dubuque was organized. (1) Among the members were such familiar names as Langworthy, Ryder, Stout, Burt, Howard, Amsden, Christman, Robinson, and Kingman.

In January, 1874, M. S. Robinson, president of the Manufacturers' Association, visited many Eastern cities to encourage expansion of business to Dubuque and to see if a wagon bridge could financed. A large meeting assembled to hear from him upon his return; he recommended a donation of land to desirable manufacturers who should come here and announced that a wagon bridge could be financed in the East.
