PEASLEE, BREDE COMPANY
PEASLEE, BREDE COMPANY. Formed in 1902, the company was an extension of PEASLEE & COMPANY founded in 1866 by Amos H. PEASLEE and a Mr. Conygham. From 1880 to 1896 Edward C. Peaslee, the son of Amos Peaslee, managed the brewery and added the sale of fine cigars.
The company moved to 272 East 4th Street in 1897 and 4th and Iowa around 1902. In this year, Peaslee took in Mr. Brede as a partner. Peaslee, Brede Company included the operation of the brewery, a brewing agency, a saloon, and a wholesale cigar trade.
In 1907 E. C. Peaslee sold his share of the company and bought an interest in the New Vienna Brewing Company in New Vienna, Iowa. The Dubuque company returned to the name Peaslee & Company but declining sales of ale led the firm to close the same year.
In 1910 a portion of the factory was leased to H.A. Hill of Georgia for the manufacture of ginger ale and "coco cola"(sic). (1)
