TREMONT HOUSE
TREMONT HOUSE. The hotel was opened by W. W. PYNE and later operated by Rebman and Alexander. Advertisements in 1860 claimed a watchman was "up at all hours of the night." In 1873 the site was considered for the construction of an opera house. (1)
Ownership of the hotel became a problem with most proprietors staying only a year. In February 1877, the Dubuque Herald announced that W. W. PYNE had leased the establishment for $100 per month. The Tremont House had 72 rooms above the first floor for rent. (2)
The 1858-1859 through 1878-79 Dubuque City Directory listed the corner of 8th and Iowa. Rebman and Crossman were the proprietors.
