FREUND, George

FREUND, George. (Dubuque, IA, Apr. 27, 1920-) FIRST CITIZEN AWARD recipient from the TELEGRAPH HERALD for 1989. Freund, one of the original staff members of KDTH, served as president of the Iowa Association of Radio and Television News Broadcasters and the Iowa Associated Press Broadcasters. Beginning his association with the communications industry while a senior at Columbia Academy, Freund worked as an on-the-air personality with KDTH radio. While a student at LORAS COLLEGE, Freund produced The Voice of Loras," a weekly radio program.

After military service in World War II, Freund returned to Dubuque and resumed working at KDTH. He also owned and operated Enzler's luggage and gift shop from 1956 to 1962 and found time to serve on the Dubuque City Council from 1958 through 1960. In 1960 Freund began working for Loras College as its director of publications, retiring as vice-president for development in May 1985. With his retirement from Loras, Freund began doing weekly editorials for KDUB and working for Frank Hardie Advertising in the area of land lease negotiations.

In 1978 Freund began his first capital campaign for Loras. He started work with the LORAS PLAYERS and the Loras College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. Freund's list of other civic activities includes his ten years on the board of directors of STONEHILL CARE CENTER, serving a term as its president. He was also a member of the DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, the SAINT JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH Renovation Committee, St. Joseph's Catholic Church Finance Committee, Five Flags Executive Committee, and the Educational Fund for the ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE. Freund was the chairman of the Mercy School of Nursing board, and chairman, charter member, and fundraiser for the Loras College Sesquicentennial. He researched "Sesquicentennial Minutes," short television highlights of Loras College history and alumni.

In addition to his award from the Telegraph Herald, Freund was recognized in 1985 as the Loras Club of Chicago's "Loras Man of the Year." In 1985 he was also the recipient of the Distinguished Civic Service Award from the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce and the Community Leadership Institute's Leadership Award. He was honored in 1988 by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives as its outstanding volunteer fundraiser of Dubuque and Clinton.

A charter member and former president of the Serra Club of Dubuque, Freund was named the club's "Outstanding Serran" in 1989. In 1991 he began a two-year term as governor of the Iowa-Nebraska district of Serra International.
