STORES (first). Noble F. Dean opened Dubuque's first store in 1832. Selling such "Yankee notions" as cotton shirts, razors, handkerchiefs, and boots, the store was located along Mineral Street (now West Locust). While far from the present business district of Dubuque, it was near the important Langworthy smelter. The second store to open in Dubuque was a saloon. Owned by Sam Morris, the establishment apparently did not do as well as Morris had hoped. He moved his business after a short time to Beetown, Wisconsin.
