PLEINS & BEACH. F. M. PLEINS & CO., Dubuque's first soap and candle manufacturing company was constructed in 1850 in a small wooden building at South Locust and Bluff by F. M. PLEINS. After Jesse P. FARLEY purchased an interest in the company, it was renamed the DUBUQUE LARD-OIL, SOAP, AND CANDLE FACTORY.
In 1858 James Beach joined the business by purchasing the interest of Jesse P. FARLEY. The company was renamed Pleins & Beach. In 1859 Beach purchased the interest of his partner. The company eventually became JAMES BEACH AND SONS
The 1858-1859 Dubuque City Directory listed Dodge at the foot of Bluff.
The 1859-1860 through 1880 Dubuque City Directory listed the corner of Locust and Dodge. ---
