PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY. Organized in May, 1854, the Society's object was "to cultivate a knowledge of music." (1) The group performed large concerts and occasionally was hired to serenade at an individual's birthday. Similar groups in the late 1800s from outside of Dubuque included vocalists and comedians. (2)
