FIRES. Dubuque has been the scene of many disastrous fires. It has been claimed that the belvedere, the glass observatory on the roof of homes built in ITALIAN VILLA ARCHITECTURE were used to observe the city for fires to allow the rest of the community to prepare.

Among the fires in Dubuque was the destruction of the Hotel Julien in 1913. The CANFIELD HOTEL was destroyed in 1946.
