CHRISTMAN, Augustus. (Pennsylvania, Sept. 8, 1836--Sept. 7, 1894). Christman's parents came to Iowa in 1837 and located in Dubuque. Following service in the [[CIVIL WAR]], he worked in the dry-goods trade. He established his own business in 1869 and was soon joined by his brother.

While still a boy, he was employed at Levi's dry goods store and clerked for Joshua Duncan. Following service in the [[CIVIL WAR]], Christman returned to the dry-goods trade and in 1869 was joined by his brother. They dissolved their partnership a few years later, but then renewed it. (1)


The firm of [[J. AND A. CHRISTMAN AND COMPANY]] located at 672 Main Street was a dealer in dry goods and notions. One of the company's clerks was [[STAMPFER, Joseph Frederick|Joseph Frederick STAMPFER]].
