MCDONALD, Alfred. (Maysville, KY--Dubuque, IA, January 15, 1877). McDonald came to Dubuque in 1835. He brought the first steamboat to the frontier community, owned the first brickyard and built the first brick house. McDonald once owned nearly all the bluff from Mineral Street to Eighth and was deeply involved in mining. Speculation in other business opportunities, however, left him near poverty at the time of his death.
