Father Schlegel served as the executive and academic vice president of John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, before becoming a university president. On October 17, 1991, he was named the president of the University of San Francisco, succeeding Father John Lo Schiavo, who has served as USF's president for the prior fourteen years. Father Schlegel officially became the 26th President of the University of San Francisco on June 15, 1991.

SCHLEGEL, John P. (Rev.) (Dubuque, IA, July 31, 1943--Omaha, NB, Nov. 15, 2015). Father Schlegel received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Saint Louis University. He received his theology degree from the University of London and his Ph.D from the University of Oxford.

Father Schlegel served as the executive and academic vice president of John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, before becoming a university president. On October 17, 1991, he was named the president of the University of San Francisco, succeeding Father John Lo Schiavo, who has served as USF's president for the prior fourteen years. Father Schlegel officially became the 26th President of the University of San Francisco on June 15, 1991.

In 2000, Father Schlegel was named the President of Creighton University in Omaha. Schlegel has been credited with increasing student enrollment during his tenure at Creighton University. He also guided a $400 million capital campaign and oversaw the acquisition of 40 acres of land located east of the existing campus.

In July 2010, Father Schlegel announced his intent to retire as President of Creighton University at the end of the 2010-2011 academic year.

Father Schlegel joined America as president and publisher in November 2011. (1)

Father Schlegel served as a member of any international national, and local boards of directors, executive committees and associations. He was a past member of the board of trustees of Chicago's Loyola University, Xavier University in Cincinnati, Loyola University of the South, St. Louis University and Loyola College in Maryland. He also held board positions at St. Mary's Medical Center Foundation; Il Cenacolo; Coro; World Affairs Council of Northern California; the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities; the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, where he served as chair of the National Student Aid Task Force; and Heythrop College at the University of London. He was also a director of the American International School of Hong Kong. (2)

In 2003 Father Schlegel received the Otto Swanson Spirit of Service Award by the National Conference for Community and Justice. He received the Champion of Greatness Award from Special Olympics Nebraska in 2005. In 2007 he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, and in 2009 was honored with "Citizen of the Year." (3)
