In 1856 Clark, a recent arrival to Dubuque, became a teller in the bank of [[MOBLEY, Mordecai|Mordecai MOBLEY]].  When the bank closed, he became the secretary of the [[DUBUQUE HARBOR IMPROVEMENT COMPANY]]. He was serving as a teller in the State Bank of Iowa when a business opportunity developed. (1) William Hyde Clark and [[TALLMAN, Peleg|Peleg TALLMAN]] leased the [[SHOT TOWER]] in Dubuque for three months beginning in the spring of 1859 with the intent of manufacturing [[SHOT]]. (2)


It was probably the start of the [[CIVIL WAR]] that brought about the quick end of their company. Clark served in the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Iowa Volunteer Infantry and then as a Major and Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General [[HERRON, Francis J.|Francis J. HERRON]]. He became the Assistant Mustering Officer for the Western Division of Pennsylvania and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war." (2)
