Established in 1900, the Clark Roller Awning Company was the first company of its type in the United States.  Located at 139-145 2nd Street, the company manufactured tents, canopies, canvass hammocks, sacks, and national and foreign flags. The company also sold twine, rope, camp and lawn furniture, campers' and hunters' outfits and cooking utensils.

The company manufactured tents, canopies, canvass hammocks, sacks, and national and foreign flags. The company also sold twine, rope, camp and lawn furniture, campers' and hunters' outfits and cooking utensils.
 
Among the unique items marketed by the company was the "Clark Travelingman's Rope Fire Escape." Going beyond its title, the article was installed in colleges, schools and factories and benefited from its simplicity.
 
The business employed twenty people during the busy season and consumed 40,000 yards of material in all widths annually.
