Librarian Amy Muchmore pointed out that J. O’Hea Cantillon actually died on Monday, March 31, 1879. His obituary appears the next day, April 1, in the ''Dubuque Daily Herald'' at https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=4sRCAAAAIBAJ&sjid=WKsMAAAAIBAJ&pg=1791%2C5167895.
That obituary seems to indicate that Cantillon served as sheriff after Ernst Young died in office in 1872, seven years earlier, but only until the successor Michael Liddy was elected that the same year, in 1872.
