The painting, dating between 1517 and 1520, shows John the Baptist. Incorrectly attributed to a contemporary of del Sarto, the portrait had been last exhibited in 1863.

ART DETECTIVE. In 1980 James Welu, LORAS COLLEGE graduate and the Director of the Worchester (MA) Art Museum, found among the items to be sold by a church in Massachusetts a lost painting by Andrea del Sarto, one of the master artists of the Italian Renaissance.

The painting, dating between 1517 and 1520, shows John the Baptist. Incorrectly attributed to a contemporary of del Sarto, the portrait had been last exhibited in 1863.
