KLEINSCHMIDT, John. (Dubuque, IA, September 9, 1860--Dubuque, IA, Dec. 31, 1907).  Kleinschmidt attended the public schools until twelve years of age, at which time he entered his business career as a clerk in his father's store. He later became a partner in the business which was then conducted under the firm style of F. Kleinschmidt & Son. He eventually purchased his father's interest in the store and carried on business--[[J. KLEINSCHMIDT]]-- alone for a number of years. In 1893 he sold out, and his financial resources increased with investments in real estate.

Kleinschmidt was an organizer of the Iowa Mutual Building & Loan Association and served as its secretary for a time. He served one term as Alderman from the Third Ward in 1887. He was active in beginning the sewer and water systems of Dubuque.
