LAFLIN, SMITH AND COMPANY. Laflin, Smith and Company which became LAFLIN AND RAND POWDER COMPANY became a local agent of Chadbourne and Forster, the chief competitor of Dubuque's SHOT TOWER, as early as September 1861.
The image of the Shot Tower was used on their order forms into the 1870s after Chadbourne and Foster had lost the tower in 1871 due to their failure to pay back taxes.
The 1858-1859 and 1859-1860 Dubuque City Directory listed 5th between Main and Iowa.
The 1861 through 1867 Dubuque City Directory gave the address for this business as 56 Main.
