LANGWORTHY, Julia. (Edwardsville, IL, Mar. 1, l823-Dubuque, IA., Apr. 24, 1907). Civic leader. The wife of Solon LANGWORTHY, Julia was an active local participant in efforts that helped raise money to purchase Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, and present it as a gift to the nation.
During the CIVIL WAR, Langworthy helped other local women make clothing for the troops. She visited her husband in 1863 when his regiment was in Memphis and carried needed medicine and other useful items with her instead of additional personal clothing.
In 1864 Julia Langworthy served on the executive board of the Northern Iowa Sanitary Fair that raised $81,000. She was later one of the first board members of the HOME OF THE FRIENDLESS in Dubuque.
