BOWERY DANCE. A popular form of entertainment at "The Pavilion" of UNION PARK every Wednesday night and on weekends during the late 1890s and early 1900s. The dance began with the band playing half of a song with the dance floor empty. Employees of the park would then circulate among the audience picking up nickels from anyone who wished to dance. Giving a nickel allowed a person to choose their partner and dance for the rest of the song.
