AVERY FOUNDATION. The Avery Foundation honors Jim Avery, a well-known Dubuque artist through a newly created foundation that helps cancer patients. Avery died from cancer in 2015.
Avery's name is synonymous with Dubuque's Historic Millwork District. "Especially with the cancer and I found out how bad it was. I thought why not sell everything and do what I want for the rest of the time," said Avery in 2014.
Railings, benches, flower boxes and high profile areas throughout Dubuque came to benefit from his talents. Avery was a skilled welder and metal artist. He spent the rest of his time sharing his art, his skills and his time.
His family is now working to continue Avery's legacy of helping out. They've launched the Avery Foundation, which raises money for cancer patients to pay for bills they don't expect, such as if they have to travel, meals and gas.
The Avery Foundation board of directors officially launched the new foundation on September 9th with a celebration starting at 6 p.m. at the CONVIVIUM URBAN FARMSTEAD.
